What to do when you're down in the dumps

Published over 2 years ago • 1 min read

Hey friends,

I recently discovered a new self therapy routine.

Not that it's super groundbreaking or anything. But it works wonders for me at least.

Whenever I feel uninspired or borderline depressive, here's what I do:

I go to the nearest coffee shop, grab an iced latte, and then walk to the second closest train station.

Why the second closest?
Because the distance is just right, and I feel the walk will help clear my mind a little (actually, a lot).

Why an iced latte?
Uh, for no particular reason actually. For the past decade I was dabbling in coffee, I have almost always gotten a hot drink. Only recently have I come to appreciate an iced coffee.

And if you HAVE to ask why a coffee, we can just stop being friends right now 😠

So far the routine's been great. Just today I did exactly this, and I managed to break free from the anxious spiral which has been consuming me for the better part of the past week. More about that on Wednesday.

THE iced latte
Ah... Every sip a dream, every swallow a gift.

Now, on to this week's dose of science-y nerdiness.

For the first time in literally forever, a kidney for a genetically-altered pig was successfully attached to a human body. And get this, the transplanted kidney STARTED WORKING IMMEDIATELY.

(Source: Morning Brew)

I'm sharing this because no animal organ has been transplanted this successfully before.

Mostly it's just been skin grafts, some cells and heart valves that are being transplanted, and that's already saying something.

Also, this seems like the perfect segway into a fun fact. The answer to the question that is UNDOUBTEDLY on all your minds.

Why name this newsletter Heartstrings?
Okay fine, I may have been presumptuous about everyone asking it, but hey, all for funsies.

To be honest, the name has been sitting in my mind for quite some time now. It's inspired by this anatomical structure in our heart, the chordae tendineae, colloquially known as the heart strings.

Simply put, they function to keep our heart pumping properly and blood flowing smoothly.

And you know me, I'm a sucker for a) coffee and b) anything to do with the heart and cardiology.

Heartstrings.

I just didn't know if it would work.

Until a group of inspiring souls encouraged me to go with the name, and that if it speaks to me, it will speak to my readers (ie. you lovely human being) too!

Yes Write of Passage folks, I'm talking about you. If you're reading this thank you.

I love the name so much I even made a cute lil logo-ish image for it 😃

Heartstrings
As always, let me know your thoughts!

So thank you, dear you, for gracing my words with your presence and time.

Until next time, take care and stay safe!

With hope, joy, and heart,
Mich

To be absolutely frank with you, after a month of patient-facing work, it feels like I don't know what to write about anymore. I miss writing. I miss the buttery smooth feeling of typing on this keyboard. I miss sitting in silence and crafting pretty words Mind you, I'm loving my job at the hospital, minus a couple of oddities. But there's just always something happening, all the time. It's go time from my morning bus ride all the way till work ends. So yes, I do miss the quietness of sitting...

Hello you! Since my last email, we've moved from one side of the island all the way to the other. We're very near the beach now, just a 10-minute walk away. So I'm very thankful. I'm not a sand-in-my-toes kind of person. In fact, I don't enjoy the feeling of sand in between my toes. For me, being near the beach is more about the sunrises and the sunsets. Actually, scratch that. It's all about the sunrises and the sunsets. During one of my morning runs I absolutely love the movement of the...

Hello you, happy Saturday! I hope your week went by productively and you're gearing up to a well-deserved weekend. So I did a thing. A few things, actually. ONE. Remember I mentioned a project about dealing with pesky student loans last week? Yeah, I created this post on my personal website. For accountability and also for tracking purposes. In it, I've also documented some money rules I created for myself to follow in 2022. All that to say.. feel free to call me out if you see me breaking...
